Remember: The main idea is what a text is mostly about.
Sometimes it is in the text as a "Topic sentence" or a sentence in which the author clearly states the main idea or lesson he or she is trying to share with us.
Sometimes the main idea is unstated and you have to look for details which give clues as to what it is.
Summarizing and connecting or grouping the most important ideas in a story will help you identify it.
